Chapter 10

Aidan checked his pistol over, examining the battery pack then the trigger. They’d be going into an unknown situation, one he felt certain would devolve into a fight. No one liked collectors showing up at their door, and definitely not guys that owed someone like Tomb. They’d put up a fight.

The death of Tomb’s agents might even send a message not to mess with them.

Then there was another side to the equation. What if Tomb sent them out to die on purpose? If he already knew about a bounty, he might use the debtors to take down his quarry. Then cut them in on the action. Their debt cleared plus one percent. Just a taste of the pie, but better than what they deserved.

When Anson came back with the intel on how many people they were dealing with, then Aidan would know if they’d been set up or not. He hoped Tomb knew better than to play that kind of game. If he and Sibyl survived the situation, they’d be obligated to put a beam through their old friend’s face.

Kinda worried we’d be in that position regardless.

Aidan put his weapon away then stepped into the hallway. People milled about though not nearly as many as downstairs. Their targets had a room in the web of rooms just across from him. They turned it into a hotel of sorts, complete with a front desk. They’d have to go up a flight of stairs to get to their destination.

“Sibyl,” Aidan muttered, “you in position?”

“Yep.” Sibyl chuckled. “Way too easy. Gotta say, this place don’t have the best security. It ain’t exactly a hotel. Reception person’s practically takin’ a damn nap. We could probably just walk through and start shootin’ people if we really wanted to. Hell, we’re probably bein’ overly cautious.”

“Settle down,” Aidan said, “let your buddy work. Best to be overprepared.”

“I hear ya. Anson?”

“Yep,” Anson replied, “here and stuff. Aidan’s right. There are people in there we should be worried about. This isn’t a friendly place. And while they aren’t making themselves obvious, I’ve got plenty of guns on the premises. I’d say thirty total. Subtlety’s the name of the game here, folks. Hey! Good thing we don’t have Vin!”

“I dunno,” Sibyl said, “kinda think he’d be the right person for the job in some ways. Thirty guys wouldn’t make him flinch.”

Anson snorted. “It damn well should. Just because he was born under a lucky star doesn’t mean everyone around him has the same benefit. He might survive, but other people always go. Remember Harlon? I gotta say—”

“Don’t,” Sibyl warned, “you know better than to bring him up. That wasn’t Vin’s fault anyway. You know that.”

“Just sayin’, they were close friends.” Anson clicked his tongue three times. “You gotta wonder if the bad luck washed off of Vin and hit his pal.”

“Harlon was an asshole that day,” Sibyl replied, “and he died as a result. So stop disparaging one of our own and start spittin’ out some damn intel. What’ve
